As a fellow freelancer in Kenya, I understand the unique challenges we face while navigating the global economy through online platforms. I have experienced the highs of delivering quality work and receiving payments from clients abroad, only to encounter the lows of seeing those payments stall in my PayPal account. Picture this: funds that should support our livelihoods instead vanish into the unknown, or our accounts get locked with little to no explanation. With allegations of these practices, we must ask ourselves: Is PayPal providing poor services to Kenyans just because they have no headquarters in Kenya?

Many Kenyan freelancers encounter a common issue: payments that arrive in PayPal can suddenly freeze. In fact, some reports indicate that up to 180 days may pass before these funds are released, often without any transparency regarding the reasons for this hold. One survey led by Kenyan entrepreneur Sam Gichuru revealed that 44.1% of respondents stated that over $5,000 was being withheld in their accounts.


Furthermore, if a PayPal account becomes permanently limited, withdrawal options shrink drastically. Users lose access to popular local options like Mpesa or Equity Bank, leaving them with the daunting option of linking to a U.S. bank account, which not all freelancers possess.


This scenario paints a troubling picture of PayPal's reliability for Kenyan freelancers who depend on these funds for their livelihoods.


The Impact on Freelancers


The ramifications are serious. When payments are delayed or withheld, freelancers face not just financial strain but emotional distress. With many juggling multiple projects, unexpected payment issues can halt their progress entirely.


For instance, imagine a graphic designer who has been waiting for a significant payment to cover essentials like rent and groceries. When their funds are locked away, not only does it create a financial gap, but it adds stress that can affect their productivity and creativity.


Also, with no local support office to address concerns, many freelancers report feeling abandoned. When an account issue emerges, seeking help from a global entity can often lead to frustrating experiences.


Why PayPal Should Set Up Local Support in Kenya


PayPal needs to establish a local support office in Kenya — and here’s why. Thousands of Kenyans use PayPal daily for freelancing, business, and global trade, yet when problems arise, there’s nowhere to go for real help. Emails and bots can’t solve urgent issues like frozen funds or account limits that affect people’s livelihoods.


A local PayPal support centre would build trust, improve service response, and give Kenyan users a fair chance to resolve issues fast. It would also show that PayPal truly values one of Africa’s most active online economies — not just our transactions, but our people.
